SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A man accused of killing three people and injuring five others in a Southport mass shooting Saturday night was a veteran who suffered lasting effects from a traumatic brain injury , according to court records and his ex-wife, WWAY reported.

Nigel Max Edge, 40, formerly known as Sean DeBevoise, served multiple tours in Iraq before being wounded and slipping into a coma, online records show. His ex-wife, Rachel Crowl, said that Edge was never the same after returning home, WWAY said.

“When Sean was wounded initially and came out of his coma, his memories were not what they are now,” Crowl said. She added that after struggling with a traumatic brain injury and PTSD, Edge became delusional and immersed himself in conspiracy theories.
