A jury trial began Monday for a man accused of fatally shooting a 17-year-old boy near an informal shooting range at the Caja del Rio recreational area southwest of the city in 2023.

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Saavedra told jurors during her opening statement Monday that Edgar Robles Escudero, 25, and another man, 21-year-old Giovanny Saldivar-Nicolas, lured victim Eduardo Preciado Luevano to the area late on a January afternoon by telling him Escudero's father's truck was stuck out there.

Saldivar-Nicolas — who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in July as part of a plea deal that calls for him to serve between 15 and 25 years in prison — is expected to be a key witness in the case against Escudero.
