MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, as well as the state of Minnesota and others, over immigration policies.
There’s no legal definition of a sanctuary jurisdiction, but the term generally refers to governments with policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Courts previously have upheld the legality of such laws.
The DOJ is trying to enforce a border emergency declaration made by President Trump, saying in the lawsuit that sanctuary jurisdictions "intentionally obstruct federal law enforcement and celebrate thwarting the constitutional obligation of the President of the United States to take care that federal immigration law be faithfully executed."
