When they first received the messages from the Governor General's office about the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers, Carol Metcalfe and Joan Brown thought it might be a fake.

"I thought it was a scam because who gets emails from the Governor General's office," said Metcalfe.

"I thought it was a scam, for sure," Brown agreed.

It was genuine, the long-time Langley volunteers learned.

Considered the highest possible recognition of volunteers who have made a a significant, sustained, and unpaid contribution to their community, Brown and Metcalfe's Sovereign's medals were on view at a Saturday, Sept. 27, celebration in Langley City to honour their accomplishment, with about 60 people in attendance.

Both said the recognition was unexpected.
