ST. GEORGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials shared a reminder to the public after a smoker plugged into an outlet via an extension cord sparked a fire.

According to the St. George Fire Department, you should always plug smokers, grills, and other high-heat equipment directly into a wall outlet to prevent fire hazards. Officials said that extension cords aren’t created for heavy-duty appliances.

The fire happened late Thursday night, September 25, on Nicholson Drive near Woodstock Park Boulevard.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered a carport and an attached storage room in flames. The fire was just feet from a home.

Crews quickly began fighting the fire and were able to get it extinguished in less than 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Investigators determined the fire
