DENVER (KDVR) — A former high school student, who survived an on-campus shooting nearly 20 years ago is helping student survivors of the recent Evergreen High School tragedy.

Severin Steensen was a student at Platte Canyon High School in 2006, when a gunman took 7 students hostage, shooting and killing one, Emily Keyes.

Steensen says shortly after that attack, someone reached out to him and handed him a sketchbook filled with messages of hope.

Now 35 and living in Oregon, Steensen is returning the favor, raising money to buy sketchbooks for the Evergreen High School student body. He is asking friends and former Platte Canyon classmates to write words of encouragement.

He set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe where the public can donate.
