FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Fort Fairfield Police Department has closed the town's dog park due to several cases of parvovirus in Aroostook County.
Chief Cummings said on social media Monday evening that the dog park on North Caribou Road will be locked temporarily. The department will re-evaluate in a few weeks, he said.
On Sunday, Houlton police warned about several confirmed cases of parvo in the area , but did not specify exactly how many.
Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in dogs and can be fatal if untreated. Puppies are especially vulnerable, but unvaccinated or immunocompromised older dogs are also at risk, police said.
The virus is preventable through vaccination.
