ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The City of Elmira is now taking steps to improve the environment on its streets. Last week, the city council approved an update to the city's street tree ordinance.

The new ordinance modernizes the city of Elmira's street tree list. Elmira City Councilmember Gary Brinn says the previous list was outdated. Brinn adds that this will make it easier for residents to plant trees that are beneficial to the community.

The update is part of a planning project with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County in partnership with the Chemung County Planning Department. The city was approved through a grant program. The Elmira Urban Green Equity Project, also called EUGE, works to increase green spaces and shade to reduce heat in the city.
