A huge pile of rubbish had to be emptied out onto the street so firefighters could find the burning item

Nottingham City Council has sent a stark warning to residents after a spate of lorry fires.

The council has released images of the aftermath of a fire in a recycling lorry on Friday, September 26 - the sixth one this year .

The collection vehicle caught fire because an electrical item was put in the recycling bin , causing the other items to burn.

The council says electric scooters and rechargeable power banks put in the recycling bins have been the main causes of the six lorry fires it has dealt with this year.

This is because lithium batteries combust when crushed. When inside the collection vehicle, this causes a fire and can burn up to 15 tonnes of waste and recycling.
