A Hubig’s Pie with coffee is good. But what happens when Hubig’s is coffee?

That’s the proposition of a new limited-edition flavor of the oh-so-New Orleans handpies that were released Monday for National Coffee Day.

This new cafe au lait flavor is a collaboration between Hubig’s and the New Orleans-based roaster and café brand French Truck Coffee . This is a limited run, and I wasted no time getting my hot little hands on them.

This Hubig’s pie is the standard oblong turnover, fried and glazed. Bite in and the sweet dough shell collapses around a coffee cream filling, made with French Truck cold brew coffee.

The filling tastes like a sip of dark, chicory-tinged coffee, mellow and rich. It’s not too sweet on its own, but picks up the sweetness of the glazed crust.
