The New York Mets’ 2025 season will go down as one of the most painful collapses in franchise history. Pete Alonso and Juan Soto were not enough to save the team. On June 12, they held the best record in baseball at 45-24. By the end, they had fallen apart, finishing 83-79 and missing the playoffs after a miserable second half.

As if the collapse wasn’t bad enough, drama arrived moments after the final game. Following a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins that sealed their fate, Alonso announced he would use the opt-out in his contract to enter free agency. That decision, and especially its timing, didn’t sit well with many former players and pundits.
