TVK Chief Vijay Takes Responsibility for Karur Tragedy
Vijay, the president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at his rally in Karur, which resulted in 41 fatalities and over a hundred injuries. In a video statement released on September 30, 2025, he described the incident as the most painful experience of his life. He urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to direct any anger towards him rather than his party members, who he believes should not face repercussions for the tragedy.
In his emotional address, Vijay stated, "My heart is filled with pain and only pain." He acknowledged the overwhelming turnout at his rallies, attributing it to the love and affection of the people. He emphasized that public safety was always a priority, and his party had sought police permission for the rally at a venue deemed safe.
Vijay defended his actions following the incident, explaining that he left Karur to prevent further unrest. He said, "How could I leave that town when so many people were affected? But if I go there again, some other incidents may happen. That’s why I didn’t go." He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, promising to meet them soon.
The TVK leader also addressed the criticism surrounding the rally, stating that the party had adhered to all necessary protocols and had not acted negligently. He questioned why the tragedy occurred only in Karur, despite successfully campaigning in five other districts without incident. He asserted, "We campaigned only in the place allotted to us. TVK did not do anything else wrong in Karur."
Vijay's statement comes amid rising tensions and police actions against his party members following the stampede. He challenged CM Stalin, saying, "If you are angry with me, take revenge on me. Don’t lay a hand on the volunteers." He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to continue his political journey, stating, "I will be at my house or party office. My political journey will continue stronger and bolder. It will not stop here."
As investigations continue, Vijay's plea to spare his party workers while he takes the blame highlights the ongoing debate about political accountability and crowd management in large events.
