As the weather gets chillier respiratory illnesses like the common cold, flu, and coronavirus are on the rise. Right now, two COVID strains are making waves as they become the most common variants. ‌

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that the XFG variant is the newest COVID-19 strain and is currently the most widespread in the UK. It was first spotted in January 2025 and is often called Stratus. Besides Stratus, another strain being monitored is NB.1.8.1, known as Nimbus. ‌

Similar to Stratus, it's believed to be highly contagious
