Shoppers across the country are increasingly turning their attention not just to price tags but also to the small stars displayed on electronic appliances. These stars, marked on products such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and geysers, indicate how energy-efficient a product is.

The rating is issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Government of India. Officials explain that the system is designed to “inform consumers about how much electricity an appliance saves and how much electricity it consumes".
