Emily Blunt is terrified by the prospect of AI "actors" like Tilly Norwood taking over Hollywood. Over the weekend, actor, comedian and technologist Eline Van Der Velden revealed that her new AI talent studio Xicoia was in talks with Hollywood talent agents interested in signing their first artificially intelligent creation, Norwood. The story swiftly prompted an uproar from actors, and Blunt has now weighed in on the debate on Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast. Reading the story during the interview, The Devil Wears Prada star said, "Does it disappoint me? I don't know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is." When shown a picture of Norwood, she exclaimed, "No, are you serious? That's an AI? Good Lord, we're screwed. That is really, really scary. Come on, agencies, don't do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection." Blunt follows in the footsteps of Scream actress Melissa Barrera, who made her feelings clear on Instagram over the weekend. "Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room," she wrote. Matilda actress Mara Wilson also asked, "And what about the hundreds of living young women whose faces were composited together to make her? You couldn't hire any of them?" and Marvel star Simu Liu sarcastically quipped, "Movies are great but you know what would be better is if the characters in them weren't played by actual humans but by AI replicas approximating human emotion." Van der Velden, who revealed the project during the Zurich Summit at the Zurich Film Festival, issued a statement addressing the furore over the weekend. She insisted that Norwood was "not a replacement for a human being", but rather "a piece of art" that opens up "fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting".
