AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The San Antonio Zoo will be home to a new 937-square-foot ocean conservation lab in 2026, with a focus on coral reefs.
Specifically, the lab will focus on coral conservation, research, and restoration. It will also have an emphasis on education.
Hope Roth, the zoo's vice president for public relations, said that it will be named in honor of the late R.P. Brewer, a San Antonio College geology professor.
The lab, when finished, will contain both Texas and international coral species.
The laboratory will work with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to learn more about corals while also working to restore coral reefs. Climate change has caused the planet's oceans to heat up, leading to more coral species becoming endangered.
