A 28-year-old man killed his father and then fatally stabbed himself in the ensuite bathroom inside his family’s Burlington home in a murder-suicide, Ontario’s police watchdog has concluded.

The stabbings happened at the family’s Cornerstone Drive home, near Dundas Street and Appleby Line, early on June 3 during an apparent mental health incident, the Special Investigations Unit report released late Monday reveals.

The two first responding Halton police officers “endeavoured to resolve the situation peacefully” by asking the man to drop the knife, calling for additional resources, “quickly” arresting him and offering first aid, said Special Investigations Unit director Joseph Martino, who cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.
