Joshua Ederheimer’s recent commentary, “Society’s mistreatment of law enforcement is unacceptable” (Sept 25), conspicuously omits the violence inflicted on police officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. That omission is glaring. President Donald Trump not only rewarded those assaults with pardons and clemency, but his administration has celebrated the perpetrators as “patriots” and “heroes.”
Respect and trust in law enforcement must be earned, not demanded. When Trump publicly encourages officers to “rough up” suspects and is met with cheers from uniformed police, it only deepens the divide between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect.
