UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley believes “a lot of coaches today are afraid to coach,” and he explained why in a nationally televised interview on Monday.

Speaking on “CBS Mornings,” Hurley was asked about his no-nonsense coaching style and a related quote from his new book Never Stop: Life, Leadership, and What It Takes To Be Great : “Pushing players to the max should be the norm. And it used to be. But these days we’ve allowed people to grow soft. Which is ironic because life is only getting harder.”

Asked to elaborate on his coaching style, which has drawn criticism for behavior that sometimes goes overboard, Hurley added:

“I think it’s not a form of punishment to instill discipline, accountability, work ethic,” said Hurley, the Jersey City native and former Seton Hall
