SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

As California continues to grapple with an insurance crisis, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday directed several state agencies to analyze and come up with new ways the state handles the cost of a catastrophe.

State leaders have been working to lure more property insurance companies back to the state after a series of catastrophic wildfires pushed many to either drop or limit policies in California. In response, the California Department of Insurance made sweeping changes to state insurance regulations that allow companies to consider new factors when setting rates. In exchange, those companies must provide coverage in more wildfire prone parts of the state.
