How to glimpse the northern lights in mid

From the central and northern Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula, Michiganders may be able to see the northern lights shimmering overhead Tuesday night, Sept. 30, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) forecast.

The view line on SWPC's dashboard map shows people in up to 14 states could see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, Tuesday night. Michiganders as far south as Saginaw, Grand Rapids and Port Austin may be able to see the glowing lights in the night sky to the north, NOAA says.

Local National Weather Service offices forecast a mix of clear and cloudy skies across the state's central and northern areas. For best viewing, head to a dark, open area under clear skies, experts advise.
