CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- Firefighters from Owaneco and Taylorville responded to a field fire Tuesday afternoon.

The fire happened south of Assumption. Matthew Adermann, Taylorville's Fire Chief, said the fire started in a ditch around 12:34 p.m., and the wind spread the flames to a nearby bean field.

Adermann estimated that between 1.5 and 2 acres were burned, but the fire was stopped before it could spread to other fields. The cause is unknown and will likely be undetermined, Adermann added.

At this time, Christian County does not have a burn ban in effect, but dry conditions have prompted other counties in the region to adopt their own, including Coles and Iroquois Counties.
