Mitchell resident Katie Vander Velde wasn’t in attendance for the Cops for Cancer fundraising event held in her hometown Sept. 27.

Her admiration came from a distance, she says, but she literally has a deep connection to it.

It started years ago when Vander Velde’s mom, Lorna Parkinson, read a newspaper story about a police officer out west who showed kindness to a five-year-old boy who was undergoing chemotherapy and had lost his hair.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society’s website, Gary Goulet, while working his shift as a police officer, visited his sister, who told him about a five-year-old boy, Lyle, living across the street. Lyle was undergoing chemotherapy treatment and the other children were teasing him because he had lost all of his hair.
