NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) —The Atlantic Shark Institute had a big catch recently.

For the first time, the ASI's Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVs) documented a great white shark in Rhode Island waters.

"These small white sharks can be so elusive we didn't know if it would ever happen," ASI Executive Director Jon Dodd said.

The shark was seen swimming in the waters near Block Island and investigating the BRUVs.

The BRUVs is lowered to the ocean floor with bait attached to attract marine life, and the camera captures anything that passes by.

Dodd said the BRUVs study has been going on for several years and the system has recorded a variety of sharks, sea turtles, tuna and other creatures, but never a white shark.
