A spirit of hope for a better future was evident Tuesday, as hundreds of people wearing orange marched through downtown Wallaceburg in a show of solidarity for national Truth and Reconciliation Day.

The fourth annual healing walk, which started at the library and finished at Civic Square Park for a ceremony and speakers, was spearheaded by Walpole Island Employment and Training and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

Participants young and old, with some carrying signs, sat or stood quietly while residential school survivors spoke about losing their language and culture, along with enduring abuse and other indignities.

The day is held in honour of these who attended the schools, as well as those who never came home.
