COLUMBUS, Ohio — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the City of Columbus is stepping up its efforts to prevent future cases by taking a closer look at the numbers.
Earlier this year, Mayor Andrew Ginther tasked the city’s Office of Violence Prevention with leading this work. Their approach starts with understanding the full scope of the problem, and the first half of the city's Domestic Violence Assessment lays out just how serious this problem has become.
According to the Office of Violence Prevention Director Rena Shak, the report examines more than 15,000 domestic violence cases. City leaders are using the data to find gaps in services and figure out what needs to change to better support survivors.
Data collected for the domestic violence assessment was collected from
