One of the two 17-year-old Cranford High School students riding e-bikes who were struck and killed on Monday was being stalked by the hit-and-run driver, local residents said.

“She made complaints and nothing was done,” friend Tammy Carbajal told CBS-2 on Tuesday . “It’s just a tragedy.”

CBS-2 identified the girls as Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas. Both were struck in their hometown on Burnside Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. and were airlifted to area hospitals, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. They were later pronounced dead. Members of the Cranford community held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night on Burnside Avenue.

Another neighbor told Fox 5 New York that officials had been made aware of the alleged stalking.
