The Democratic congressman serving Lake, Porter and northwest LaPorte counties in the U.S. House says Republicans are to blame for the federal government shutdown that began Wednesday.

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, said with Republicans in control of the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate and the White House, it's their fault the necessary federal spending legislation was not enacted in time to keep the government operating.

"They are unable to agree among themselves and unwilling to compromise with Democrats," Mrvan said. "Their dysfunction will harm our economy and hardworking Americans, who do not have the luxury of simply walking away from their jobs."
