The Columbia Police Department is seeking upgraded charges in the Sept. 27 downtown shooting that led to the death of Stephens College student Aiyanna Williams.
The department said it submitted an amended probable cause statement Sept. 30 to Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Roger Johnson seeking a charge of second-degree murder for Misael Covarrubias, 23, of Fellsmore, Florida, who is accused of firing the shot that killed Williams. As of Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, Covarrubias remained charged in online court information with three counts of armed criminal action, three counts of first-degree assault and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, all felonies.
