Two parishes will see major savings on their flood insurance bills

Starting Oct. 1, homeowners in unincorporated Jefferson Parish will see major savings on their flood insurance bills. FEMA has upgraded the parish's Community Rating System score to Class 3, unlocking a 35% discount on NFIP flood policies. That's the largest discount offered anywhere in Louisiana and among the highest nationwide.

The Community Rating System is FEMA's way of rewarding parishes that go beyond the basics of flood protection. Stronger building codes, stricter floodplain regulations, drainage maintenance and more public outreach all add points. The higher the score, the bigger the discount. Advertisement
