The Florida Highway Patrol is mourning a trooper who died days after suffering an injury while working on the sideline of a college football game.
Senior Trooper Craig Gaines had been with the FHP since 2008 and as extra duty, worked as lead security for Florida A&M University head football coach James Colzie III, officials said. Getty Images
Gaines was working the Sept. 6 FAMU game against Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and was on the sideline when he was unintentionally struck by players at the end of a play, according to the Fraternal Order of Police Florid State Lodge.
After he initially "shook off" the injury, Gaines continued to experience pain and it was discovered he'd fractured his leg.
