Hurricane Humberto had dissipated by Wednesday morning after swirling out at sea for a little over five days, but its path alongside Hurricane Imelda won't soon be forgotten.

Humberto and Imelda came within 467 miles of each other as Category 1 storms on Tuesday, the closest two Atlantic hurricanes have come in at least the past 60 years, according to Miami-based meteorologist and hurricane expert Michael Lowry.

Lowry said it was amazing to see two hurricanes churning side-by-side, a phenomenon that, while more common in the larger and more prolific Pacific Ocean, rarely occurs in the Atlantic.

Since weather satellites first gained prominence in 1966, only nine other pairs of named Atlantic storms have been recorded in proximities comparable to that of Imelda and Humberto, Lowry wrote
