After a quiet first five games with the Oregon Ducks, one of the most coveted offseason transfer additions will be redshirting the remainder of 2025.

Coach Dan Lanning announced on Wednesday that Tulane transfer running back Makhi Hughes asked the team to redshirt for the remainder of the 2025 season, and that request was granted. Though not official, the decision likely indicates that Hughes intends to transfer once again.

Hughes reportedly did not make the trip to Penn State for Saturday's win over the Nittany Lions.

Expectations were high for Hughes, a two-time First Team All-American Athletic Conference selection, coming into the year. He was named a preseason All-American after rushing for 1,401 yards and scoring 17 total touchdowns with the Green Wave last season. However, Hughes has appeared in just four games so far this season, taking 17 carries for 70 yards.

Oregon has instead seen other backs emerge, namely freshman Dierre Hill Jr., who leads the team with 270 yards on 26 carries. The Ducks have also given carries to veterans Jayden Limar and Noah Whittington over Hughes.

Hughes was one of the most highly anticipated transfers in the country this season, but after things didn't work out in Eugene, every indication is that he will be playing elsewhere next season.
