ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A federal court has rejected an appeal from Mario Guevara, the Atlanta-based Hispanic journalist who had been detained by federal immigration officials since June 14, to halt his pending deportation.
Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for Georgia’s 11th circuit denied Guevara’s motion. The American Civil Liberties Union , which has been advocating for Guevara’s release for months, said he could be deported as soon as Thursday.
Guevara, who is originally from El Salvador but has lived in the U.S. since the early 2000’s, was detained while covering a protest in DeKalb County. He was subsequently transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.
On Wednesday, Guevara’s family said he is being transf
