CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) - October is Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month and state leaders have emphasized attentiveness on the road.

Experts with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said distracted driving is the cause of a large number of traffic accidents each year. Failure to focus behind the wheel can put pedestrians and other drivers at risk. It can put work zone crew members in a particularly dangerous position. "A driver of the vehicle is responsible not only for themselves, not only for the folks that they have in their vehicle, not only for the other motorists around them, but for all the pedestrians.
