WILSALL, Mont. – Shields Valley Elementary School officials are calling on the community to address serious structural and maintenance issues at the school. Since 2023, the school has been without heat in its classrooms and is now trying to pass a bond this November to bring the school up to modern standards.

Shields Valley Elementary, standing since 1911, is facing significant heating challenges. The school's boiler, which had been in operation for 80 years, went out of commission in 2023, leaving the school without heat. In response, they have relied on portable heaters to warm the building from the hallways.

Superintendent Danny Johnston expressed the urgency of the situation. "It breaks my heart because, our kids in Shields Valley deserve what everybody else has," said Johnston.
