The Polaris Building site in downtown Fairbanks is no more. It will now be known as the Starter Block on Lacey Street, according to Fairbanks Mayor David Pruhs.
Pruhs announced the name change at Monday’s Fairbanks City Council meeting, noting that the downtown parcel has a new beginning.
“We are saying bon voyage to the past and moving into the future,” Pruhs said.
Pruhs credited Festival Fairbanks Executive Director Julie Jones with creating the new name and the concept of using the city-owned lot in an interim capacity. Jones and Corey DiRutigliano, with FAST Planning, developed the ice rink concept.
“They brought the concept to me and I said it was a fantastic idea,” Pruhs said.
Pruhs said that the Public Works Department and volunteers will help assemble and install the ice rink
