Tarleton State announced Friday that coach Billy Gillispie has been placed on temporary administrative leave pending the results of an investigation into an anonymous complaint. No details about the complaint or potential wrongdoing from Gillispie are known at this time.
A longtime college basketball head coach, Gillispie previously made stops at Texas A&M, Kentucky and Texas Tech.
While we don't yet know the nature of the complaint or investigation, Gillispie has been the subject of allegations of player mistreatment in the past. He resigned at Texas Tech in 2012, a month after the school announced it would be investigating the claims of mistreatment. Gillispie's treatment of players and staff was also questioned at Kentucky, where he was ultimately fired in 2009.
Gillispie is entering his sixth season at Tarleton State, where he holds a 78-74 record. He reached the CBI in 2023 and the CIT in 2024 but is coming off a 12-20 season, his worst with the program.
Associate head coach Glynn Cyprien will serve as acting head coach while the university completes its investigation.
