WASHINGTON — Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson decided Friday that the U.S. House of Representatives will not return next week after the U.S. Senate failed for the fourth time to advance a spending bill to reopen the federal government.
Johnson reportedly made the decision to pressure Senate Democrats to vote on what Republicans call a 'clean' stopgap bill that would keep the government open for just seven weeks.
His decision to cancel next week's votes came on the third day of the federal shutdown and minutes after the Republican spending bill failed 54-44 in the Senate.
"All around the country right now, real pain is being endured by real people because the Democrats have decided to play politics." Johnson said ahead of the vote.
No additional votes are expected over the weekend.
