A recovery effort is underway to remove two bodies found in a remote area of Victoria's alpine region after the deceased women were discovered by hikers.

Police were called to Lendenfeld Point, Nelse on Friday afternoon following reports two bodies had been found in the area, a Victoria Police statment said.

A pair of hikers alerted authorities after coming across the bodies while walking near Cleve Cole Hut at around 12:50pm.

Uniformed officers, the Search and Rescue Squad and Air Wing, responded to the incident.

The identities of the women remain unknown, however they are believed to aged be in their 20s or 30s.

Victoria Police said the deaths do not appear to be suspicious and that they may have been in the area to hike and camp.
