An upset was in the making.

But Bay City Western couldn’t find the final ingredient.

The underdog Warriors had No. 3-ranked Mount Pleasant on the ropes, leading by three with under four minutes to play. But the Saginaw Valley League North-leading Oilers rose to the occasion, scoring two quick touchdowns to pull out the 28-17 victory.

“We’re going to use this to fuel us, use this to our advantage,” Western coach Chris Willertz said. “When you lose a close game like this, it can get you down. But we’re not going to get down, we’re going to get angry.”
