WASHOUGAL — Royce Jones iced Friday’s game with a first-down run, then proceeded to do a series of backflips after the final buzzer as the Washougal football team ran toward the Fishback Stadium end zone to celebrate.
It’s become Jones’ go-to move after every Panthers win, none bigger than a 14-12 triumph over Ridgefield to move Washougal into sole possession of first place in the 2A Greater St. Helens League standings with four weeks left.
“We’ve had ups and downs at practices, but this week we really locked in,” Jones said. “Coach was talking to us about it — we really stepped up — and I feel like it showed tonight.”
The final move was fancy, but for most of 48 minutes, it was a blue-collar, grind-it-out performance by the Panthers, particularly on defense.
