Personal finance company WalletHub released its list of states with the highest student loan payments , and New Hampshire took the No. 3 spot.
The list was compiled based on consumer data and the median student loan payment amounts across all states.
WalletHub determined that about 42.3 million Americans collectively owe $1.67 trillion in student loans .
"With the average student loan debt of over $39,000 and a fixed interest rate of 6.39%, the rate for federal undergraduate loans, it would require a monthly payment of around $288 to pay off everything within 20 years," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo wrote in the report .
