WASHINGTON —

The government shutdown is expected to stretch through the weekend as senators struggle to reach a bipartisan deal.

It started on Wednesday, when Congress allowed funding for federal agencies to lapse without a stopgap measure in place.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer , D-NY, told CNN on Friday that a bipartisan group has been discussing possible compromises.

"They haven't come to an agreement and, according to the Senate Democrats, the Senate Republicans offered them virtually nothing," Schumer said.
