Victoria's Director of Public Prosecutions will appeal the sentence handed down to convicted triple-murderer Erin Patterson.

On Monday, the Office of Public Prosecutions confirmed the appeal had been filed on the basis that the sentence handed down to Patterson was "manifestly inadequate".

Patterson was sentenced to life in prison with a 33-year non-parole period over the murders of relatives Don and Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, who she poisoned with toxic mushrooms in during a meal at her home in regional Victoria in 2023 .

She was also convicted of the attempted murder of Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson, who survived the lunch but spent weeks recovering in hospital.
