French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned, after less than a month in the position.

Mr Lecornu was appointed prime minister in September.

He was preceded by François Bayrou, who also quickly left the position.

Mr Bayrou was appointed prime minister in December 2024, lasting just nine months.

Mr Lecornu had just formed a new cabinet, which was broadly similar to Mr Bayrou's, on Sunday, local time.

But the new cabinet line-up had angered opponents and allies alike, who either found it too right-wing or not enough, raising questions on how long it could last.

France is already mired deep in political crisis, with no group holding a majority in a fragmented parliament.

Mr Lecornu handed his resignation to French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning.
