Hundreds of animal rights activists wearing costumes and holding banners protested on Sunday against the sale of animals in a popular market in Mexico City.

The demonstrators accuse some vendors at the iconic Sonora market of selling farm animals as well as exotic species and violating animal protection laws.

"Everything that happens in the market is an injustice," said Stephi Silva, a protester.

"(The animals) need a voice, because they are the ones who pay the most and have the least rights."

Another activist said they were seeking protection for all animals, not just those being sold in the Sonora market.

Vendors from the market watched on as protesters marched past. Some were seen throwing eggs at demonstrators.
