A year after Californians flocked to the polls to vote in a presidential election, they are once again being asked to vote on a measure with national impacts this November. This time, it’s Proposition 50 , which Gov. Gavin Newsom announced alongside the statewide special election back in August after weeks of floating the idea.

If Prop 50 passes, California will implement newly drawn congressional district maps that favor Democrats to counter the mid-decade redistricting in Texas that favors GOP seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s all ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, in which seat gains on either party’s side is critical.
