Despite the federal government shutdown , Michigan residents expecting Social Security benefits this week will receive their money on schedule as the shutdown does not disrupt such payments.
The first wave of Social Security payments for the month of October goes out to recipients this week, with this month marking the first under the agency’s new paperless policy .
Most recipients will need to have a direct deposit set up with their bank account or use a Direct Express card to receive payments this month, SSA said.
The change from paper checks to direct deposit is due to President Donald Trump's executive order in March ending the issuance of checks by the government. Federal agencies had to comply by Sept. 30.
