A former commander of Sudan’s notorious Janjaweed militia has been found guilty of 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in massacres of villagers in Darfur more than 20 years ago.

The verdict at the International Criminal Court in The Hague is the first conviction of a war-crimes suspect in the Janjaweed’s scorched-earth campaign, which the court has described as a genocide. The attacks included the torching and destruction of many villages in the Darfur region of western Sudan in 2003 and 2004.
